…It was about 11.30, on a cold winter evening. A strong wind was blowing.
Mary Larson was coming back home from the cinema. When she was outside her block of flats, she
saw glass on the pavement.
She looked up and saw her kitchen window broken! It was late and all her neighbours were
sleeping.
She panicked but she called the police on her mobile right away. Two policemen arrived within
five minutes.
Together, they unlocked the door and got into the flat. It was in a terrible mess! Some
furniture was upside down!
Mary's clothes were lying on the floor and her money and jewellery were missing!
The policemen searched the flat, asked Mary some questions and wrote a report.
Mary spent that night at a friend's house and the next day she got someone to repair the
window and fit a new lock.
Three days later, she went to the police station and found one of the policemen, John Edwards.
Unfortunately, he didn't have any news about the burglars but he asked Mary out for a cup of
coffee.
Mary said ‘yes’ because she liked John. You can guess the rest. Very soon, they fell in love
with each other and decided to get married!
Mary never got her jewellery back but she found a lovely husband. And all this thanks to that
broken window!
